Boat Wrecker / 2009

Franco Soffiantino Gallery, Turin. Photo by Fulvio Richetto

Sound sculpture, wood, steel, nylon, produced in collaboration with the Museum of Popular Music of Calabria and Luigi Briglia.

A hybrid sound sculpture, a harp with 44 strings of gut, steel and nylon, made with the wood of the boats of immigrants abandoned on the coast of the Ionian Sea, which for many years I had the opportunity to examine and photograph. The disembarked boats, transformed into an instrument that still resounds with the sea, symbol of pain and courage, represent a utopian idea of integration. In another room the poem “Prophecy” (1964) by Pier Paolo Pasolini, an impressive prediction of immigration to Italy, is recited by Toni Servillo in a video downloaded from the web, and written with charcoal on the walls.
