The Skanderbeg project is a video-performance on a dual monitor, on which in sync we can see the shots taken by a fixed camera and the other hidden in a shoulder bag. Skanderbeg was the 15th century Balkan hero who did not permit compatriots to leave Albania during the war against the Ottomans. Umbaca, with clothes borrowed from an Albanian refugee and a blonde wig, turns to the motorist stopped at the red light, saying phrases related to tolerance, religion, art … I wanted to experience the limit of tolerance, to understand to what point I could arrive in approaching the other. This, besides being a serious game, is an act of necessary creativity.
Il progetto Skanderbeg è una video-performance su doppio monitor, su cui in sincro si vedono le riprese effettuate da una videocamera fissa e l’altra nascosta in una borsa a tracolla. Skanderbeg fu l’eroe dei Balcani del XV secolo che non permise ai compatrioti di lasciare l’Albania durante la guerra contro gli Ottomani. Umbaca, con i vestiti presi in prestito da un profugo albanese e una parrucca bionda, si rivolge all’automobilista fermo al semaforo rosso pronunciando frasi inerenti alla tolleranza, alla religione, all’arte… Volevo sperimentare il limite di tolleranza, capire sino a che punto avrei potuto spingermi nell’avvicinare l’altro. Questo, oltre a essere un gioco serio, è un atto di creatività necessario.
