In the Survival project (http://www.undo.net/survival) consisting of two actions held in the underground of Milan and Rome, Umbaca chooses to operate in the subway, as a place devoid of real relationships, of strong emotional impact, everything can happen to you and where “during the movement from one station to another, within the carriage, identity becomes unstable, because nobody knows who the other is”.

The reflection on the role and the identity of the artist, “staging a scene” with a methodology that is provocatively similar to that of non-EU immigrants asking for alms on the subway, emphasizes some form of relationship or response on the part of an audience, who should be of contemporary art, who is struggling to understand its language and methodologies. As Emanuela De Cecco notes in the text that accompanies the work, “the intent and the activation of a debate on the possibilities that the artist has, to interact with the external environment, the society the structures” but also on the condition of lability of the artist’s identity, well represented by the subway journey, in continuous and incessant search for a legitimacy to his work. Text by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi.
