Intervista Campanella – Campanella Interview 2004
For the exhibition at the Galleria Sogospatty Roma, Video min.37.52, sculpture and audio reading Città del Sole. Curated by Teresa Macrì

Centuries after his birth, there remains a mystery about the birthplace of the philosopher Tommaso Campanella, keeping open the dispute between the two neighboring villages of Stilo and Stignano in Calabria, both claiming his place of birth. So much so that in the fourth centenary of his birth a commemorative plaque was applied on two different supposed birth houses.. The project consisted of an exploratory journey through the countryside of the two municipalities, in search of the disappeared traces of this philosopher who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries, looking for testimonies from families bearing his surname, who told stories and anecdotes in front of the camera linked to their own history and to the presumed degree of kinship with Tommaso Campanella. On display in addition to the video, a statue of Campanella made of terracotta, with inside, candles that heated the sculpture, and a sound installation with an audio recording made in the Circondarial House of Pisa. From the prison, Adriano Sofri, essayist and former leader of the Italian revolutionary movement of Lotta Continua, reads with Marco Bassani a passage from Campanella’s “Città del Sole”. “The pregnant reading of the passage that Adriano Sofri makes of it, binds the ineffable biography of these two characters stumbled into the intolerable condition of detention and from which springs and grows, who knows how, that obstinacy for their own truths.” (Teresa Macrì, from the text in the catalog)
