With the Lost at Sea project Enzo Umbaca has given new life to the Monument to the Lost at Sea located in via Padova at the corner with via Don Orione, with the collaboration of the children of the Tempo per l’Infanzia social cooperative, the musicians of the Orchestra of via Padova and the ANPI section of Crescenzago, mobilizing many local neighborhood realities and city institutions. Paradox of the fact of being a place dedicated to memory but in turn forgotten, the monument has been identified by the artist as the subject-guest of his site-specific work, whose title refers to the tragic events of migrants. The artist has united the flags of the most numerous foreign communities residing in via Padova and its surroundings in a single banner and has worked with the children of the social cooperative to create another flag with their drawings which, starting from the ideas collected in their neighborhood, represent the ideal reality in which they would like to grow up. The two flags are hoisted on the masts of the monument, with a flag-raising ceremony accompanied by the trumpet of Raffaele Kohler, who played “il Silenzio” every morning for a week.

The project coordinated by Francesca Zocchi, Anna Pirolli and Martina Nessi was produced by ASSAB ONE, on the occasion of Città d’Arte – inContemporanea ’09, Triennale di Milano.

Promoted by the Province of Milan, for the enhancement of art and the cultural development of the area.
